Web Resources: WieWasWie

The English WieWasWie logo
WieWasWie is the premier site for finding the records of your ancestors in the Netherlands. This site
is exactly what a records search site should be. It's very easy to use, provides relevant search options and allows you to download scans of the records it has available.

Created as the successor to Genlias by STAP with ownership transferring to Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie during November 2014, Wiewaswie has around 10,000 visitors per day and looks to be expanding on a monthly basis.

Some of the features on the site include:
  • Searching for multiple people, in specific places, with a date range and record type.
  • Adding records as favourites, which stores them to your personal dashboard on the site.
  • Create a personal tree on the site which you can export to GEDCOM. You can also attach records you find to those people and create pages about them.
  • Records including:
    • Bevolkingsregister = Population register
    • BS Geboorte = Birth certificates
    • BS Huwelijk = Marriage certificates
    • BS Overlijden = Death certificates
    • DTB Begraven = Burial register
    • DTB Dopen = Babtismal register
    • And many more!

WieWasWie  FamilySearch Tutorial
Here's a handy 7 minute introduction to finding records about your ancestors in the Netherlands and documents relating to those records using WieWasWie. The video can also be viewed on the FamilySearch site.

As I hope you can see, if you're researching ancestors in the Netherlands, then WieWasWie is a valuable resource. Not only for the vital records of Birth, Marriage, and Death, but also Population Registers - of which there are many scans available directly from the site. The site is fairly easy to get used to and because all of the records feed into WieWasWie, it has a consistent feel. The only time I've been directed out of WieWasWie is when I tried to look at some scan of family adverts (familie advertenties) - which will take you to a site you'll need to buy credits for. However, everything within the WieWasWie website is currently free. The amount and types of record seem to be increasing on a regular basis.

While some may feel that a free site may lack in quality or accuracy, all of the data comes from archives and history centres from around the Netherlands. ETA: There are now monthly and annual subscription options for seaching 2 people within the same records, wildcards, and additional search options (24/072018).

Now that ownership resides with the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie, founded in 1945, we can feel safe that we're searching actual records that have been transcribed with a good degree of accuracy - and be thankful for all the volunteers that have helped make these records available to us.
